Open Mike
In this issue, we debut a new column by Beaupre & Co. writing program director Mike McGrail. "Open Mike" takes a lighthearted look at current tech industry topics.
Lord of the Rings.
Yes, that was an “Intel Inside” logo on the Ring of Power when Frodo pulled it
out of fire.
Segway personal transportation device. One of the greatest PR successes in recent memory,
though the high tech scooter’s upright design makes one wonder whether Dean
Kamen mowed too many lawns when he was a kid.
Apple iMac. Steve Jobs scores mega press with his
bulbous new desktop. For an extra $100, you can get it with tail fins, curb
feelers and chrome bumpers.
Enron. The once-mighty company is accused of skirting so many financial regulations it
might as well change its name to End Run. All this case needs is its own Erin
Brockovich.
Shrinking Web ... The
number of sites has dropped to 36.3 million, according to research firm
Netcraft. That reduces the overall size of the Web but increases the percentage
of sites with pictures you’re not supposed to look at on company time.
…but more users. 54 percent of the American
public is now hooked up to the Internet. Now if we can just get them to vote in
the next presidential election.
3Com and Novell.
Nasdaq removes the former high-flying tech issues from its 100 Index, but still
has room for Starbucks and Bed & Bath. Just goes to show, never
underestimate the value of expensive coffee and a good night’s sleep.
Hand
jive. Police
at Boston’s Logan International Airport are using personal digital assistants
(PDAs) to snag suspected terrorists with instant background checks. Way to go
boys, if you can’t give terrorists the raspberry, give them the BlackBerry.
